Experience
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Mar.99 – Present
Responsible for creating, documenting and maintaining the HTML, CSS, and Javascript standards for sun.com and 38+ worldwide sites. Ensuring templates and stylesheets for Sun are optimized for efficiency in both download and rendering in a wide array of platforms and languages including Korean, Japanese, Chinese and right-to-left reading Hebrew.
Accomplishments
- Created the first CSS for Sun that eliminated the need for FONT tags, normalizing font styles and reducing code on millions of pages.
- Co-designed the user interface and built master templates for the 1999 site redesign.
- Led the technical team of an outside design agency during the 2002 site redesign.
- Served as the sole design technologist for the 2005 site redesign. This included migrating Sun’s CSS to a new look and feel, creating a large number of new HTML components, and building out a new hompage design.
- Created (and later evolved with the help of teammate Greg Reimer) a robust HTML component documentation system consisting of over 100 page templates and over 400 HTML component variations.
- Formalized CSS and Javascript releases to into a monthly release, published world wide to over 38+ countries simultaneously.
- Built out new homepage in 2008 to accommodate a new design. Despite the appearance of more images the actual number of files downloaded by the user was cut in half from the previous design. This massive cut in file calls was credited by Sun’s Director of Web Engineering, Will Snow, as a contributor to Sun’s resilience from crashing on the day of the Oracle & Sun announcement.
